Oberbroeckling, Paula Jean Iowa, USA 1970 | Link | Paula Jean Oberbroeckling (Feb 25, 1952 - July 11, 1970) was 18 years old when she disappeared from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her remains were found 4 months later by hikers. Police said the body was found draped around a steel pin in the ground, which in the past probably had been used as a power pole guy wire. Paula’s remains were in an advanced stage of decomposition. The skeleton was almost intact and there was no evidence on visual examination of traumatic injury. Paula’s wrists were tied behind her back. Her ankles were tied as well. Used were two types of flexible material: one appeared to be a plastic clothesline and the other a sort of cord. If you have any information please call Cedar Rapids Police Department at 319-286-5375. Last check 6/2021. |
Oberst Family Kansas, USA 1928 | Link | In the evening of April 20, 1928, the El Dorado (KS) farm of William and Elsie Oberst caught fire. Elsie, William, and five of the six children died in the flames. However, the cause of death were gunshot wounds. Around midnight on April 20, 1928, the oldest son, Robert Owen (17) drove to the farm after a night out with friends. From a distance, he saw the red glow of the fire. A neighbour stopped him to prepare him, deliver the news. On April 23, 1928, Owen buried his family. Right after the service, Sheriff Emory McKnight, Undersheriff Eldon Jarnagin, County Attorney Stanley Taylor, and a reporter for the Times (Will Feder) interviewed Owen without a legal guardian present. They took him to a remote part of his Uncle Fred’s farm and questioned him for over three hours. Later the newspapers reported Owen was cleared as a suspect. That didn't stop the interrogations. On May 4, 1928, they resulted in a confession. On May 5, 1928, Owen was arrested and charged with seven murders. The murder weapon? A .22-calibre rifle. Again, Owen did not have any legal representation or a legal guardian present. He faced years of trials and incarceration. In Oct 1931, when the fourth attempt was made to try him for seven murders, it was impossible to find a fair and impartial jury and the case was finally cleared. Owen Oberst was a free man. But who killed his family? Last check 6/2021. |

The dog was put down. Last check 6/2021. |
Oliver, Bernard Michael Suffolk, UK 1967 | Link | Bernard Michael Oliver (1950 - Jan 16, 1967) went missing Jan 6, 1967. He had not come home from an evening out with friends. His dad reported him missing the next day. Bernard’s remains were found 10 days later. His professionally dismembered body was found stuffed in two suitcases. His body was cut up in eight pieces. The autopsy showed evidence of sexual assault. Bernard was strangled to death before his dismemberment. I am not sure if this was manual strangulation or strangulation by object. The Bernard Oliver case is known as the Tattingstone Suitcase Murder (UK). If you have any information please contact the Suffolk Police. Last check 6/2021. |
Ombler, David Hull, UK 1914 | Link | On May 30, 1914, Mr. David Ombler (72), a market trader from Hull, was found dead by his neighbor. He was on his back on his kitchen floor on West Parade, Hull, with several head injuries. He was quickly taken to the infirmary but passed away. His skull was fractured from the forehead to the back of his head. He was beaten with a fire poker and pair of tongs. There was evidence of a struggle. Ombler had been at a wholesale market earlier that morning. His housekeeper arrived around 8am that morning but by that time the attacker was gone so the attack took place between the time Ombler came home from the market and the arrival of his housekeeper. This case remains unsolved. Last check 6/2021. |
Orange County Jane Doe (Anita Louise Piteau) California, USA 1968 | Link | The Orange County Jane Doe is identified as Anita Louise Piteau. Orcutt, Teryl Lynn Steele Florida, USA 1990 | Link | Teryl Lynn Steele Orcutt (26) went missing Jan 21, 1990. On Jan 28 she was found stabbed to death in a palmetto thicket near Black Creek, Middleburg, Florida. Her partially clothed body was found by children along a creek bank. Teryl was a bank manager, divorced from Timothy Orcutt, and had a new boyfriend, Mike Mayland. Both men were cleared by police. In Jan 2017, the FBI added seven loci so along with the original 13 loci, this is the new CODIS Core Loci. Lt. Wayne McKinney of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they found DNA on Teryl's body. However, at this point they cannot run it through the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) because right now it cannot handle specialized DNA profiles such as in this case. As a result, they cannot run it through the main DNA database for known sex offenders either. Once technology catches up, they will. Remember that like in the Patricia Louise Smith case (see database) a John Doe can be charged. It is a matter of time. Last check 6/2021. |
Oronoque Rd John Doe Connecticut, USA 1992 | Link | On August 21,1992 two pedestrians found skeletal remains wrapped in a blanket across the street from train tracks not far from the Housatonic River. The state medical examiner said the unidentified man was shot twice in the head. The article does not state the caliber or the side of the head. It also doesn’t specify whether the man had any other trauma. The man’s DNA showed him to be of Asian heritage, between 18-25 years old, and between 5’3 to 5’6 inches tall. If you have any information please contact Detective Mitchell Warwick at (203) 878-6551. Last check 6/2021. |
Osceola, Owachige Elice Oklahoma, USA 2013 | Link | On Sept 25, 2013, Norman Police found Owachige Elice Osceola (27) in an upstairs bedroom. Her body was already partially decomposed and showed signs off trauma on the upper torso. A blanket was placed over her body. The cause of death undetermined. That brings me to the blanket. The first person who found Owachige could have found her dead and placed a blanket over her. Their touch DNA would then be on the blanket which might stop them from coming forward. They might be afraid to get charged. The person responsible for Owachige’s death could have placed the blanket over her to speed up decomposition. That doesn’t prove intent to kill but definitely to conceal. If we still have the bedding, especially that blanket, or any of Owachige’s clothes she was wearing when she died, they must be examined for touch DNA with the M-Vac. There is a $40,000 cash reward for new information that leads to the arrest of the person(s) responsible. If you have any information please call Norman Crime Stoppers at 405-366-STOP. Tips can also be submitted directly to Detective Jim Parks with the Norman Police Department’s Cold Case Unit at 405-366-5208. Last check 6/2021. |

Paisley, Coe Caroline Florida, USA 1994 | Link | On Aug 3, 1994, Coe Caroline Paisley (1964 – 1994) may have interrupted a burglary in progress and as a result, she was severely beaten. She died of her injuries the next day. There were a lot of construction workers constantly in and around the house. Police think Coe surprised a burglar, set on stealing window air conditioner units. and that she had seen that person before. Those units were never found. Coe died of blunt force trauma which usually means being beaten with fists or with a heavy object. No weapon was ever found. Coe was on life support when her family arrived. She had already been declared brain dead. The killer took Coe’s burgundy leather briefcase and of course, the two window air conditioner units. The briefcase was found by flood control workers who were dredging a canal at Northwest 132nd Street and 27th Avenue, near Opa-Locka. Inside the briefcase was Coe’s identification but nothing of value. The authorities hope someone saw that briefcase being thrown into the canal. Maybe at the time, they didn’t connect it to Coe’s murder. However, if they read about the case now, they might. Patterson, Beth Ann Brown New York, USA 1978 | Link | Beth Ann Brown Patterson (July 4, 1949 – March 27, 1978) was found beaten and strangled to death March 27, 1978. She was 28 years old. Her partially clothed body was found around 1030am by two children (11 and 9) who were looking for lost puppies near a pile of old fence posts in a swampy area behind their parents’ chicken coop on the Alton L. Noble Farm, Brocton, New York. Beth was laying face up and was partially concealed by the fence posts. The coroner said her face was battered, her slacks and underpants were pulled below her knees, and she was manually strangled to death. Beth suffered several sharp blows on her head and face. However, no skull fractures. The head injuries were secondary (e.g. not primary cause of death) to the strangulation. The type of weapon is unknown. Some papers mention it appeared Beth was sexually assaulted elsewhere and then dragged down a muddy incline to the place where she was found. She was dead less than 12 hours before she was found. The crime probably happened early Monday morning between 130-3am. Beth was last seen Sunday evening at a restaurant called Castle Inn about a mile from Noble Farm where her body was found, police said. If you have any information please contact Fredonia State Police at 716-679-1548. There is a reward in this case. Last check 6/2021. |

Percy, Valerie Jeanne Illinois, USA 1966 | Link | On Sept 18, 1966, Valerie Jeanne Percy (Dec 10, 1944 - Sept 18, 1966) was murdered in her parental home in Kenilworth, Illinois, by an unknown intruder. Valerie (21) was the daughter of former senator Charles Percy and Jeanne Valerie Dickerson. The attack on Valerie was intense and suggests it was personal. Her murderer left five bloody palm prints on the banister and a black leather glove outside the mansion. If properly preserved, the glove should be examined with the M-Vac for touch DNA. The killer also left footprints at the Percy home leading to the beach. Three days after Valerie’s murder, police found a bayonet in Lake Michigan. Police believe William Thoresen III was involved. They said he “was never cleared from involvement in the Percy case” and that his possible involvement is considered “undetermined.” Judge Anna Helen Demacopoulos ruled on December 16, 2016 that many of the files will remain sealed as she is convinced this is still an ongoing investigation especially in light of using modern technology to test evidence. Peterson, Henry W. and Ann M. Oregon, USA 1978 | Link | Henry W. (75) and Ann M. Peterson (71) were found murdered in their home around 10am on April 3, 1978. They worked as on-site residential managers of the 36-unit Canterbury Apartment complex on 875 Liberty St, SE in Salem, Oregon. Autopsies were performed by Dr. Roy Patton of Salem, Oregon. The exact time of death is unknown as is, unfortunately, the exact cause of death. So, it is possible the victims died of a fatal stab to the heart or of exsanguination. The Petersons both had defensive wounds on their arms. According to the Statesman Journal of April 4, 1978, we are dealing with multiple stab and knife slashings. This spells rage to me. The rooms were ransacked. Ann Peterson was found near the desk in the office part of the apartment. Her murderer may have tried to mask the crimes by setting the room on fire as the carpet behind her, was charred. There is a chance that Ann Peterson was murdered first and that Henry interrupted the killer when he came in. That explains where he was found. The authorities thought the Petersons were murdered several days before, maybe dead for four days, possibly March 29/30, 1978. They were seen bowling around 4pm March 29, 1978. According to the Statesman of Sept 18, 1995, the couple was 'repeatedly hit with a softball size river rock in addition to slicing them numerous times with a knife.' In other words: overkill. But it is the rock that drew my attention. If that rock was preserved it must be examined with the M-Vac. They have experience with extracting touch DNA from various materials including rocks. Just check the Krystal Beslanowitch case. The M-Vac showed in the Beslanowitch case it can find touch-DNA on rocks, that is is accurate, and with the conviction, it sets a precedent. The Marion County Sheriff's Office has a cold case website but the Petersons are not listed. The CrimeStoppers of Oregon website has no index for easy searching by keyword or name. I scrolled down all the pages but the cases do not go back further than 1980. Last check 6/2021. |
Petreikis, Petronella M. Runkaitis Illinois, USA 1952 | Link | On Nov 8, 1952 around 150pm, Petronella M. Runkaitis Petreikis (1882 – 1952) crossed US Highway 54 (now 45) to get home. She was struck by a driver who never stopped. Witnesses said the driver drove so fast all they saw was a “blue streak.” That blue streak was a 1950 blue Ford, model unknown, of which police found parts, including chrome and glass, near the crime scene. They sent the evidence pieces to the State Lab in Springfield. They determined the make of the car. The front of this car would have been heavily damaged so I wonder about any garage repairs, private mechanics called to homes, car paint jobs, private car sales, etc. that took place around the time Petronella was killed. If we still have any parts of the car, maybe by analyzing paint, we can determine the model. If you have any information please contact Illinois State Police or the Will County Sheriff’s Office at 815-727-8575. Last check 6/2021. |

Prince, Christine Toronto, Canada 1982 | Link | On June 20, 1982, Christine Prince (25) left home to go to the movies with a friend. On June 22, 1982, she was found floating face down in the West Rouge river near Sewell’s Road. Police found the murder scene about 200 meters upstream from where the body was found, off a small track in the bush known as Lovers’ Lane, a secluded lane parallel to Rouge River hidden from Sewell’s Road. There police discovered rope which they believe was used to tie her wrists, as well as her clothing and her purse which contained everything except her wallet and a Kodak instant camera. It was later established Christine had been raped, brutally beaten, but she died of drowning, either at the hands of her assailant or as a consequence of her incapacitating injuries. Prince, from the UK, worked as a nanny for a Toronto lawyer. Last check 6/2021. |
Princes in the Tower London, UK 1483 | Link | The historical mystery of the missing Princes Edward V and Richard of York have long puzzled us. Popular theory says King Richard III murdered them. In this three-part series, I explain why there are more explanations for the Princes' disappearances, why the remains found are not reliable to be identified as theirs, and why to others these boys posed a much bigger threat than to Richard III himself. Both Richard III and Henry VII faced challenges when it came to succession. Henry VII did not have offspring at the time the rumours went around the Princes were gone. His best bet to secure the throne (his own claim was weaker than Richard’s) was to marry the oldest daughter of the last King who the people held for their legitimate ruler. In other words, Elizabeth of York who was the oldest daughter of King Edward IV. Richard III had his own worries. His wife Anne and their only son, both passed away. Richard had illegitimate children but they could never succeed him. Unlike Henry, Richard did have immediate options. The Princes, both of the Plantagenet line, could succeed him at any time. So, instead of a threat they would safeguard the throne for the next generations of Plantagenets. Their offspring would secure the throne for the Plantagenet family for decades to come. Some say Richard did not regard the Princes as a safety net but as direct threats to his claim on the throne. Maybe he did however, maybe he never did. Every head of state worries about succession. Prior, Sharron Kim Point St. Charles, Canada 1975 | Link | Sharron Kim Prior (Feb 9, 1959 - March 29, 1975) was 16 years old when she disappeared March 29, 1975 after leaving home around 715pm. She was going to meet friends (including a boyfriend) at Marina’s Pizzeria. The restaurant was a five minute walk from her home. She never arrived. Sharron was found dead April 1st, 1975. She died a violent death: she was raped, beaten, and died of asphyxiation. According to the doctor, she had been dead for at least 20 hours before she was found and most likely died Tuesday afternoon. Sharron was found in a field at Chemin du Lac and Guimond Boulevard by a beekeeper. The padlock was hanging on the gate but it was not hooked. When police arrived, they found her body clothed in a three-quarter length suede Leo’s Boys Sports jacket, a sweater, shoes, and socks. Her jeans and panties were about 6 feet from her body. Her underwear hanging from a tree branch. On May 23, 2023 police confirmed that DNA retrieved from those clothes matched Franklin Romine from West Virginia. Romine died in 1982. He was 36 years old. Rev. Reeb, James Joseph "Jimmie Joe" Alabama, USA 1965 | Link | In 2011, the FBI’s Cold Case Initiative announced it is taking another look into the 46-year-old case of Rev. Richey, Kenneth Thomas Ohio, USA 1987 | Link | In 1987, Kenneth Thomas Richey was sentenced to death for the murder of Cynthia Collins (2) who died of smoke inhalation as her apartment was on fire. The prosecution based its case on transferred intent: Richey allegedly had the intention to kill his former girlfriend, Candy Barchet, and her new boyfriend, by setting fire in the apartment above Cynthia's. Initially the local Fire Chief and the Ohio State Fire Marshall ruled the fire accidental. The prosecution disagreed and hired its experts. They were convinced the fire was arson. Richey’s trial attorneys failed to have their own forensic tests done. In 1996, arson experts Andrew T. Armstrong and Richard L.P. Custer reexamined the evidence and concluded the original findings were based on unsound scientific principles not acceptable in the forensic science community for the investigation of arson-related fires today. On appeal, Custer, a specialist in fire reconstructions, testified in court that the burn patterns found in the Collin's apartment could have been a natural result of the fire. In Dec 2007, Richey accepted an Alford Plea which led to his release from death row and his return to Scotland on Jan 9, 2008. The Alford plea was a 'no contest' to manslaughter, child endangering, and breaking and entering. He was sentenced to time served with the murder and arson charges dropped. An Alford Plea or 'no contest' plea is not an admission of guilt. The accused neither disputes or admits to the charges. The prosecution admitted at trial they could not prove Richey intended to kill Cynthia. They also acknowledged Richey, when he saw the building was on fire, made several attempts to save the child but that he was held back by flames, smoke, and ultimately, the fire department. Since Jan 2018, Richey works at the American Charity Sanctuary Quarters. The charity builds houses for homeless veterans. Last check 6/2021. |
Ridulph, Maria Elizabeth Illinois, USA 1957 | Link | On Dec 3, 1957, Maria Elizabeth Ridulph (March 12, 1950 - Dec 3, 1957) vanished from a small-town street corner in Sycamore, IL, while playing in the snow. She was seven years old. Arrested in July 2011 and sentenced in Dec 2012 was Jack McCullough, formerly known as John Tessier. According to the prosecution, McCullough choked Ridulph with a wire and stabbed her. Her body was found five months after she disappeared. At the time Maria disappeared, McCullough was 17 years old. In Sept 2012, then-former police officer Jack McCullough was convicted for Maria's murder. He received life without parole. In March 2016, the DeKalb County State's Attorney announced that a post-conviction review of available evidence showed McCullough could not have been present at the time and place of Maria's likely abduction. McCullough was released from prison April 15, 2016. Charges against him were dismissed April 22, 2016. McCullough was declared actually innocent of the crime by the DeKalb County Circuit Court on April 12, 2017. The case remains unsolved. Last check 6/2021. |

Robinson, John Evers Connecticut, USA 1990 | Link | On March 14, 1990, around 815 am, John Evers Robinson (24) a.k.a. Rokked, was found dead inside an office building at 178 Temple Street, New Haven, Connecticut. That room on the second floor was the rehearsal space for the band ‘Sold on Murder.’ It featured John Evers Robinson on bass and vocals, Frank Linden on guitars and vocals, and John Nutcher on drums. The state medical examiner determined that Robinson's skull was crushed by several blows to the head with a blunt instrument. I did not find any information in which position his body was found, whether he had been moved, if so, if there were any signs or traces on the floor. I saw nothing about a murder weapon found. Anything wood might have left splinters. Anything painted could have left paint chips. Whatever was used may have been brought to and then taken away from the crime scene. Police reopened the case in 2009 in hopes of finding more answers but nothing brought clarity. Persons of interest were identified but no charges were ever filed. If you have any information, please call the New Haven Police Department at (203) 946-6304. Last check 11/2023. |

Rosencrans, Deborah Lynn Illinois, USA 1977 | Link | Deborah Lynn Rosencrans (March 9, 1961 – Sept 18, 1977) was found barely alive on Sept 6, 1977, by a hitchhiker who heard moaning coming from the underbrush. He found a teen wrapped in bloodstained blankets tied together with rope. Deborah had been beaten so badly she was unrecognizable. When she died Sept 18, 1977, she was a Jane Doe. On Oct 3, 1977, Deborah was positively identified by her friends and later by her maternal grandmother. Police interviewed friends, canvassed the area, but could not find a suspect. They had no leads. The hitchhiker who found Deborah, Jerry Then, failed fourteen lie detector tests. Whether this had any legal consequences such as an official arrest, is unclear. I have not found anything related to a Jerry Then or a Cook County Grand Jury in the public domain. If the rope and the blanket are still properly preserved they must be examined with the M-Vac for touch DNA. The case remains unsolved. Last check 6/2021. |

Schindewolf, Richard E. California, USA 1989 | Link | Richard E. Schindewolf (40) was shot dead outside a trucking school where he worked in East Oakland, California. He was found around 1230 AM on April 6, 1989 in the parking lot next to “Transportation Careers of America” on the 800 Block of 98th Avenue. How long he had been dead is unclear. Nobody heard or saw anything. He left the school around 11 PM. His car was less than 100 feet away. He was shot at least twice. No further information about in which bodypart he was shot, from what distance, the trajectory, the bullet’s caliber, or that a gun was found nearby. What was the official cause of dead? He was found by a security guard who went to check an open gate. The papers mention that it appeared that Schindewolf had struggled with his attacker(s) so I gather that he had defensive wounds on his hands, face, and/or arms. It would be interesting to know if we still have his fingernail clippings to examine for DNA. Schultz, Gail Lee and Paul G. Pennsylvania, USA 1953 | Link | Gail Lee Schultz (Nov 19, 1934 - March 7, 1953) and Paul G. Schultz Jr. (Jan 15, 1941 - March 7, 1953), two siblings, were murdered March 7, 1953. She was 18 and he was 12 years old. They were bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument in the middle of the day. Their cases are officially labelled cold by the authorities. The Schultz children were found close to home on 28 Mitchell Avenue, Nazareth, Pennsylvania. They were in sight of many homes yet nobody saw or heard anything. Please read the post (link in middle column) for the events that eventually led to the determination of murder. According to the autopsies the children died around 230pm. This means that shortly after leaving a friend's house, they went to the creek, and met the one who would take their lives. Their bodies were discovered around 430pm. The autopsies showed Gail was struck 7 times in her head with a blunt object such as a hammer. Paul was struck 3 times in his head. One of those three blows penetrated his skull. Another interesting detail: Gail had a compound fracture on one of her thumbs. The police investigation was hindered from the start. They were unintentionally called in late. By the time they arrived, the crime scene was compromised by neighbors, the family doctor, the fire department, and fresh snow-covered everything. The blunt object, possibly a hammer, was never found. Gail’s glasses were found 9 days later about 40 feet from where she was found. Authorities found her scarf near her body. They also found a chisel with a plastic handle however, the shank was clean of rust and the shape didn’t match the head wounds. Schwochert, David Mark Wisconsin, 1973 USA | Link | David Mark Schwochert (16) took over the night shift on New Year’s Eve in 1973 from a colleague at Clark Service Station on 590 Milwaukee Ave, Burlington, Racine, Wisconsin. David’s body was found around 8am. He was two miles away from the station. A coin changer similar to David’s was found 8-9 miles away from his body, and his wallet was found about 1 mile away as well as a bloodstained towel. $60 were stolen from him but the money in a backroom at the gas station was untouched. An opportunity crime by someone who saw just one attendant on duty. Then-Sheriff Robert Bertermann thought David was taken from the gas station between 345-415am possibly at gun point. After all, David was shot dead. However, we do not know what caliber gun was used or, if the murder weapon was ever found. From Find-a-Grave, we see police was looking for a 1958 Ford sedan. I am not sure about any results. Last check 6/2021. |

Sergie, Sophie Alaska, USA 1993 | Link | On April 26, 1993, around 2pm, Sophie Sergie (20) was found dead by a janitor. Her body was in a bathtub in the second floor women’s restroom of Bartlett Hall, University of Alaska. She was raped, stabbed, and shot. Forensic tests showed her body had sat in the bathtub for up to 13 hours before she was found. Cause of death: a gunshot wound to her head. The murder weapon was never found. On Feb 15, 2019 Alaska State Troopers arrested Steven H. Downs (44) in Maine, USA. DNA found on Sophie was used to create a familial genetic DNA pool leading to Downs who had attended UAF from 1992-1996. He lived in Bartlett Hall. His then-roommate confirmed Downs had a .22-caliber handgun. That caliber was used to kill Sophie. He had no previous arrests. Downs was extradited to Alaska to face a grand jury. Due to the pandemic, jury selection started Jan 2022. On Feb 10, 2022 the jury found Downs guilty of first degree murder and first degree sexual assault. When the state rested, the defense filed a motion for acquittal, which was denied by Judge Thomas Temple who also denied a motion for a new trial. He said the defense did not present enough evidence to support arguments for a new trial. Sentencing took place on Sept 26, 2022. Downs received 67 years for Sophie's murder and an additional eight for sexual assault. He will be eligible for discretionary parole after serving 25 years. He will be 73 years old then. The State had asked for the maximum sentence that was on the books for murder in 1993. That was a range from 20-99 years. Last check 9/2022. |
Shepherd, Sally London, UK 1979 | Link | Sally Shepherd 's (24) body was found at the end of 1979 in a builder’s yard located behind a police station. Sally was stripped naked, raped, and beaten to death. She was struck on the head with a blunt instrument. Her murder was violent even for the South London crime standards at that time. A reader wrote her upper body bones were all broken, her head was smashed in, and it looked like someone had jumped up and down on her body and in doing so, broke all her bones including her spine. Police found bloodstained bricks. Her Indian takeaway dinner was strewn all over the area. They also found blood spatter several feet away from the body. Nobody was ever arrested, nobody ever faced trial. The killer became known as the “Beast of Peckham.” Police revealed in 2016 they have a potentially vital clue: three strands of hair that could be from the killer. Problem: the hairs are rootless. Rootless hairs can be used to determine ethnicity (phenotyping) and that can help narrow down the field of suspects. But, rootless hairs cannot give us a high-quality full DNA profile to make a match with 100% certainty. Until we have a better method these hairs are locked in a vault. Sherrill, Shannon Marie Indiana, USA 1986 | Link | Shannon Marie Sherrill (Aug 12, 1980 – missing Oct 15, 1986) was six years old when she vanished. She was last seen at her family’s trailer home yard on 600 Plum Street, Thorntown, Indiana, Oct 15, 1986. Around 130pm, she was outside with about ten other children. They were playing hide-and-seek. Shannon went missing while she was behind the trailer. Nobody saw her leave the yard. Police used K9 units. The bloodhounds did catch Shannon’s scent and followed it to a nearby cornfield and a cemetery. Unfortunately, then they lost her trail. Both mom and dad passed polygraph tests and are not considered suspects. Both gave DNA for comparison in databases. Shannon is white, 3 feet high when she vanished, and about 30 lbs. She has brown hair, blue eyes, has a four-inch scar (surgery, accident?) on her abdomen, and pierced ears. She was an extremely shy child. She wore a white sundress with a blue trim, no socks, no shoes. Considering Shannon was petite for her age there is a chance she is buried somewhere and listed as unidentified in a category that fits her height/weight versus age. Siwiak was killed shortly before midnight. He still had cash on him so that seems to rule out robbery. There are no witnesses, no camera footage from home security systems, and no forensic evidence. The evidence-collection technicians were able to retrieve seven spent shell casings from the .40-caliber handgun used to kill Siwiak. The shooter fired seven times but hit him only once in the chest and lungs. I have not read the gun was ever found. Henryk walked west along Fulton Street toward Albany Avenue. He was seen by a witness. At the Albany intersection, he took a right to go north, instead of taking a left to go south. The area where he ended up, the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, was known for criminal activity. We understand authorities were stretched thin on 9/11. We also understand people were scared so when they heard arguments in the streets they probably bolted the doors, hid inside, and didn’t look through the windows to see if anyone needed help. I can see why people didn’t open doors when a man knocked and cried for help. Everyone was scared 9/11 but so was Henryk. After all these years, maybe now it is time to speak about what we saw and heard that night. If you were in the neighborhood where this father of two was killed, if it was your door he knocked on, please contact police, and tell your story. Any detail, any sound, any smell, any sense of familiarity, any voice recognition, anything can help them to try and do justice to this man’s unsolved murder. If you have any information please call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential. There is a $12,000 reward. Last check 6/2021. |
Skinner, Henry "Hank" Watkins Texas, USA 1993 | Link | Henry "Hank" Watkins Skinner is on death row for the 1993 murders of Twila Busby and her two mentally impaired sons Randy Busby and Elwin Caler. Skinner is supported by various organizations fighting for post-conviction access to pretrial evidence to be tested with modern technology especially DNA. The state announced in 2012 that a crucial piece of evidence is lost. There are still unanalyzed crime scene objects in this case as well as DNA from an unknown contributor found on a knife at the crime scene. In July 2014, Judge Steven Emmert ruled it was reasonably probable Skinner would have been convicted of triple murder even if the DNA evidence had been available at his 1995 trial. On Feb 16, 2023 Hank died from complications following brain surgery in December 2022 to remove a tumor. His execution was scheduled for Sept 13, 2023. Last check 2/2023. |
Smith, Myrtle M. Sayers Ohio, USA 1930 | Link | Myrtle M. Sayers Smith (Feb 5, 1895 - found July 24, 1930) went missing June 16, 1930. Her remains were found in a berryfield July 23, 1930. According to husband North Randall Marshall Clyde C. Smith, Myrtle went for a ride in the family car. That car was found June 18, undamaged, near a cemetery in Bedford, Ohio. Myrtle was killed by a single bullet to the back of her head. The long time her body was in the field makes me wonder if she really had been there all this time. Decomposition leans that way however, you cannot exclude she had been held and/or killed elsewhere and then later was brought to the field where the elements and wildlife did damage to the body. This scenario does mean multiple crime scenes. I have not read anything about police and/or community-led search parties so I don't know what was done to search for Myrtle since she was reported missing and the time that her remains were found. Smith, Patricia Louise Colorado, USA 1984 | Link | Patricia Louise Smith (50) was born Sept 19, 1933. She was murdered Jan 10, 1984 by an at that time unknown person who raped and killed her inside her Lakewood home. Patricia’s murder is connected to the 1984 Bennett Family murders in Aurora, Colorado. Six days after Patricia was raped and murdered, the same suspect murdered the Bennett Family. In Aug 2018, Alexander Christopher Ewing (57) was accused in both cases and faced first-degree murder charges. On Dec 4, 2018, a Nevada judge ordered Ewing's extradition to Colorado. He filed an appeal. On Nov 22, 2019, his appeal was denied by the Nevada Supreme Court. The US Supreme Court did not intervene so he was extradited to Colorado. On July 28, 2020 18th Judicial District Judge Michelle Amico ruled there is enough evidence to proceed to trial for the Bennett Murders. Covid-19 postponed all trial dates. Trial started summer 2021. On Aug 6, 2021 a jury found Ewing guilty on all charges in the Bennett family murders. He received three life sentences. The trial for Patricia Smith was to start Oct 19, 2021. The next day, a mistrial was declared based on Ewing not being competent to stand trial. That motion is not public. Ewing was assessed. On Nov 15, 2021, a judge declared Ewing competent to stand trial. The retrial started on April 1, 2022. On April 7, 2022 Ewing was convicted of first-degree murder- after deliberation, felony murder- robbery, and felony murder- sexual assault. On April 12, Judge Tamara Russell sentenced Ewing to life but with the possibility of parole after 20 years. That was the sentence for first-degree murder in 1984. Last check 4/12/2022. |
Snowden, Charles Lee Florida, USA 1986 | Link | On May 17, 1986 Charles Lee Snowden was found facedown on either a parking lot at 500 Belmont Street or in an alley at 514 West Belmont, Pensacola, Florida. The papers said Pensacola Police was treating this as a murder pending the exact cause of death which I haven't found online. There is no mention of witnesses either. His (blue) shoes were about 150 feet away from his body. The shoes may have come off from vehicle’s impact. Snowden, also known as Edward Gates, appeared to have been run over but there is no information about a possible make or model of the vehicle. A bloody rock was found near his head. I don’t know if the blood on that rock was Snowden’s. Whether he was first struck and then run over, is unclear too. If that rock has been reserved, it should be tested for touch DNA. His family confirmed that the same day, the housetrailer burned down. That is quite a coincidence. If you have any information about this case please contact the Pensacola Police Detective Bureau at 850-435-1965. Last check 1/5/2022. |
Sodder Children West Virginia, USA 1945 | Link | The Sodder Children from Fayetteville in West Virginia went missing Dec 24, 1945 after a fire destroyed their family’s house. Missing are Maurice (14), Martha (12), Louis (9), Jennie (8), and Betty (5). The question was always whether these children did or did not die in the fire that consumed their home and if the fire was accidental or arson. Faulty wiring is most likely the cause of this accidental fire that caused the children's deaths. Last check 6/2021. |
Soering, Jens Virginia, USA 1985 | Link | Jens Soering was convicted of the 1985 Bedford County (Virginia) double murder of Derek & Nancy Haysom. He is serving life. Soering was dating the Haysoms’ daughter Elizabeth. She pled guilty and is serving 90 years. Six months after the murder, Soering and Haysom fled the country to England. They were arrested on check fraud charges in London, England, on April 30, 1986. Under questioning by British, American, West German (Soering is German), and Virginia authorities, both confessed to the murders. Haysom testified against Soering admitting he was an accessory. Soering said he confessed to spare his then-girlfriend. In 2009, 42 evidence pieces from the crime scene were tested with modern technology. None had DNA that matched Soering. On Jan 30, 2019 Soering was denied parole for 14th time. In Nov 2019, the Virginia State Parole Board voted to release Elizabeth Haysom and Jens Soering. They will be deported by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to Canada and Germany, respectively. If either Soering or Haysom ever return to the USA, they will be in violation of their parole conditions, will be arrested, and returned to prison. Last check 6/2021. |

The driver never stopped. Dana was walking home. She was walking with traffic as there was no sidewalk. She wore dark-colored clothes. These two things may have contributed to her getting hit however, it is no excuse for the driver not to stop. The impact of her body against the truck should have been noticeable to the driver. Soules, Gerard Homer Nevada, USA 1992 | Link | Gerard Homer Soules (Aug 3, 1936 – June 4, 1992) was a famous trapeze artist with Ringling Bros. A near fatal accident in front of the audience destroyed his self-confidence. He retired as a trapeze artist but returned to the ring with a poodle act which he performed until his death. Soules (56) was murdered in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was inducted in the Circus Hall of Fame in 2005. Soules’ remains were found by his boss when he didn’t show up for work. Soules’ throat had been cut and he was stabbed several dozen times indicating a highly personal murder. His body was found inside his trailer. Several days before he died, Soules met a man called Fred Steese. Steese needed a steady income and Soules needed a new assistant. Soules’ previous assistant was Alexander Kolupaev, a Russian defector, short of stature, with receding red hair, and always in need of money. Steese was charged with the Soules murder despite evidence he wasn’t in Nevada at the time of the murder. That was kept from the defense. Witnesses mentioned a man near the park whose description fits Kolupaev. He was never investigated. At the police department, Steese was interrogated. With a low IQ he misspelled his own name, repeated his innocence which angered the skeptical detectives, so he started to tell stories. After five hours, he signed a confession about his sixth version of how the crime might have happened. Trial started Jan 1995. Steese got sentenced to life without parole. On Oct 20, 2012, Judge Cadish ruled Steese was innocent. The Clark County District Attorney threatened lengthy appeals and even a retry or, Steese could accept an Alford Plea. The case is considered closed due to the Alford Plea so no new investigation to find out who really killed Soules. There is biological material that as far as I know, has not been tested. Starkloff, Emily Johanne Carmela Missouri, USA 2008 | Link | Emily Johanne Carmela Starkloff (Feb 23, 1989- May 5, 2008) was 19 years old when she died. Cause of death: hit-and-run. The driver never stopped, never came forward, and was never found. The hit-and-run happened just after 1am in Saint Louis, Missouri. Emily had visited some friends in Maplewood, got off the MetroLink, crossed at 4400 Forest Park Blvd and Taylor in Central West End, and was hit by a car. Emily was found by a police officer who called for an ambulance. Police had trouble finding leads as there were no witnesses. The only thing I can think off, is Emily’s body. Were there any paint chips on her or her clothes? Did she carry a purse? Anything on that purse? Any traces at all? Tire tracks? Did the car even slow down or not? Did we check all garages? Did any car need a paint job or a dent repaired? Last check 6/2021. |

The same day, her car, a Grey Dodge Omni, was found abandoned on Highway 71, north of Belle Vista Town Centre, Arkansas. There were no signs of a struggle, her keys were found in the ignition, and her wallet was in the car. The left rear tire was a bit flat and the contents of her purse/handbag were found strewn around the area of Chaucer and Hanover Road. Her remains were found in September by a hunter in a remote, wooded area, somewhere near the Newburn Lane area, a long way from where her car was found. The case remains unsolved however, police is still actively investigating. Last check 6/2021. |
Stevenson, Sigrid M. New Jersey, USA 1977 | Link | Sigrid M. Stevenson's murder is known as the Kendall Hall Murder Mystery at Trenton State, NJ. On Sept 4, 1977, Sigrid (Jan 24, 1952 – Sept 4, 1977) was murdered near a piano on the stage inside Kendall Hall. Patrolling police saw her bicycle in the bike rack in front of Kendall Hall. They knew it was hers so they went inside. When the officer climbed on the stage, he found her dead body. Sigrid was found nude, lying face down, and wrapped in a covering. She was beaten to death. Some of her belongings were found such as her wallet with cash and travelers checks. Some of her clothes were found as well. I found online that Sigrid was strangled and in one of the article's comments it said she was strangled with a piano cord. If so, did the autopsy officially rule out manual strangulation? Did the piano on stage miss a cord? Some articles said there was blood on her music sheets. What we know now about blood spatter, patterns, and velocity is dramatically different from then. Have these sheets been reexamined by scientists? What could have been the motive? If she was beaten beyond recognition it tells me this was a highly personal crime. She knew her attacker. The case remains unsolved. Last check 6/2021. |
Stone, Sonia Carmen Herok California, USA 1981 | Link | Sonia Carmen Herok Stone (May 27, 1951 – Oct 5, 1981) was found murdered in her house in Carmel, California, in 1981. She left behind one daughter. At the time of her death, Sonia was divorced. She was found by Caroleen McBride around noon. Sonia's body was just inside the front door. Cause of death: strangulation with an object. She appeared to be sexually assaulted. She was partially dressed and strangled with a pair of pantyhose found wrapped around her neck. If preserved that pantyhose is a goldmine for touch DNA. There were signs of a forced entry, possibly a struggle. It isn’t specified what exactly was stolen and where in the house entrees were forced. In 1981, Michael Scott Glazebrook (then 25) was arrested and tried twice for Sonia's murder. In 1983, the murder charges were dropped. On Aug 15, 2021 Glazebrook was arrested again as the authorities re-examined the case with modern technology. He was held on 1mio bond. The preliminaries and arraignment were in late March 2022 and April 8, 2022. Trial started Jan 30, 2023 and ended Feb 7 with a guilty verdict. On June 7, 2023, he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Last check 6/7/2023. |
Stubbs, Tiffany Robin Missouri, USA 1988 | Link | Tiffany Robin Stubbs (April 21, 1986 - May 27, 1988) had just turned two when she died. Her nude body was found about 11 hours after she was reported missing. Around 430pm, two boys found her face down in approx. 18 inches of water near the Little Blue River, Kansas City, Missouri. Her remains were just a few miles away from her home on 300 Hill Street, Belton, Missouri. Police could not rule out homicide and foul play appears the only logical answer. The cause of death was asphyxiation from drowning. Tiffany had bruises on her back however, authorities were not sure whether they have anything to do with her death. According to a lawsuit “Tiffany was taken by her abductor to a creek approximately three miles from her home, sexually assaulted, and murdered.” There was evidence the screen door to the Stubbs’ home was cut. I tried to find more by checking the Stubbs lawyer. Unfortunately, Michael D. Gibbons passed away in 2015. Last check 6/2021. |
Sullivan, Dennise Jeannnette Utah, USA 1961 | Link | Dennise Jeannette Sullivan’s (15) went missing under very violent circumstances. She is presumed dead. In July 1961, Dennise was on vacation with her mother, Jeannette Sullivan (41), and her mother’s fiancé, Charles Boothroyd (55). They visited Dead Horse Point in Utah and were at a scenic spot near the Colorado River. There, Jeanette was shot in the back of her head with a .22 caliber rifle. Charles had two bullets in his face and hands (defensive wounds). While the killer dragged the bodies to the side of the road Dennise tried to get away in the family car. The killer followed and forced her off the road after about half a mile by a side-collision. He then forced her in his car and drove off. Boothroyd was left for dead, but he survived to tell police about the crime. Police searched by jeep, plane, and by boat but never found Dennise. Tatman, Robert Lawrence Illinois, USA 1967 | Link | On Nov 25, 1967, Champaign police officer Robert Lawrence Tatman (March 6, 1940 - Nov 25, 1967) was found dead. He had been shot with his own .38 service revolver. The cause of death was severe hemorrhage due to a single bullet that went through both lungs resulting in shock. Tatman died within minutes after being shot. Judging from paraffin tests of Tatman’s hands, it seemed his gun was taken from him and pushed into his ribs. He then obviously tried to grab the gun but it went off. The revolver went missing making it hard to review this case with modern technology. The cause of death could not be established. The victim was approx. 50-60 years old, 5’4″ tall, 152 lbs. His short hair was greying, the colour of his eyes was brown, dark bushy eyebrows, and his beard was several days old. He still had his appendix but there was a scar on his lower abdomen, not sure of the exact location. There was evidence of brain surgery on the right-sided frontal craniotomy. This means that a part of the bone was removed from the skull to access the brain. How old this scar is was not listed on the website. The man did not have lower teeth but did wear dentures on the upper jaw. I’d like to know if any dentures were found in the area where this man collapsed. It is unknown if there are fingerprints. Van Camp Murders Annie and William Wisconsin, 1940 USA | Link | Mrs. Annie Van Camp (77) and William (31), the youngest of her seven sons, were murdered by shotgun blasts to their faces May 11, 1940, inside their home. Both were shot with a 12-gauge. The Sheriff estimated both victims were shot point blank. Their wounds were not larger than the bore of a 12-gauge gun. They both died instantly. Dr. H. E. Ellsworth, then-Outagamie county corner, thought they had been dead for at least six hours before they were found. The Outagamie County authorities did not have a lot to go on. Their investigation was hindered from the start by a disturbed crime scene. Robbery was most likely the motive. According to the papers, a ‘large shepherd dog, which neighbors said was a good watchdog, was tied about 30 yards from the farmhouse.’ Whether this was indeed the Van Camp dog, is unclear. I did not read anything about neighbours hearing a dog bark. Whoever got the dog away from the farm, must have been familiar to the dog. Van Meter, David Alonzo Kentucky, USA 1975 | Link | David Alonzo Van Meter (1904-1975) was found dead Dec 5, 1975 approx. six days after he had been killed by a .22 caliber bullet that hit him in the chest. No suspects were found and there was a lack of evidence. The reclusive lifestyle made it difficult to retrace his steps and make a timeline. I have not found anything about the bullet's trajectory, an autopsy, or any follow-up. His body was discovered by neighbor Roger Knight around 9am Dec 5, 1975. Knight lives about half a mile away and he was the nearest neighbor. Van Meter was a bachelor. He lived in a modest three-room home on 20 acres. It wasn’t an easily accessible home as it was on a dirt road. His only transportation was his horse Prince on which he often rode into Upton for supplies. His home did not have electricity, no running water, no telephone, and there were no traces of bills to pay. He bartered for supplies, rented part of his land to another farmer who grew tobacco, and received a monthly Social Security Check. The fact that he didn’t pick up his check was what alerted Knight that something might be wrong. What Knight has to do with Van Meter’s finances? I’d like to know if Knight and the tobacco farmer were excluded as suspects. The horse, Prince, was outside at the time of his death. Was the horse taken care off? The condition and the behavior of the horse should match being left alone for a few days with nothing to eat. If you have any information please call the Hardin County Sheriff at 270-765-5133. Verstappen, Nicky Brunssummerheide, the Netherlands 1998 | Link | On Aug 10, 1998 Nicky Verstappen (March 13, 1987 - Aug 10, 1998) disappeared from a summer camp organised by local youth groups at Brunssummerheide, Limburg, the Netherlands. The night before he went missing, all camp activities ended at 10pm. The kids went back to their tents and it was lights out. Nicky (11) was last seen around the tent he shared with other kids at 5am. Three hours later he was gone. On Aug 22, 2018 Dutch Police announced a breakthrough: they got DNA off Nicky's clothes. With familial DNA searches they narrowed down the group of suspects and zoomed in on Jos Brech. He officially became the suspect. A national and international APB were issued as Brech went missing. His family told police Brech went hiking in the Vosges, France. He was arrested Aug 26, 2018 in Northern Spain. Madrid High Court judges decided Aug 27, 2018 to extradite Brech (55) to the Netherlands. On Dec 12, 2018, an initial hearing took place. Brech denied having abused, kidnapped, and killed Nicky Verstappen. The next proforma session was March 8, 2019. It was decided Brech should stay incarcerated pending psychiatric evaluation. On Nov 20, 2020 Brech was sentenced to 12 1/2 years for sexual abuse causing Verstappen’s death, his abduction, and possession of child pornography with deductions for time served since arrest. The sentence is lower than requested (15 years) by the prosecution. However, the court felt hindered by not having concrete evidence of cause/exact time of death. In Jan 2022, the Court of Appeals sentenced Brech to 16 years as they did find him guilty of manslaughter. Last check 2/2022. |

Waggoner, Richard Lee Texas, USA 1981 | Link | Richard Lee Waggoner (April 18, 1958 - Sept 12, 1981) was killed Sept 12, 1981. He was shot in the parking lot of a school close to the bar “Danceland” on 712 West Daggett Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas. Richard was standing outside the bar, on the parking lot, sharing a beer with a lady who had not met Richard before. She told police they were approached by two Hispanic looking men. One of them asked for a cigarette. Richard gave him one. Then they asked for a match. While she searched for one, one of the two men drew a gun and they tried to rob Richard. When Richard resisted a shot was fired. Richard died of exsanguination, the traumatic laceration in the ascending arch of his aorta. There was an arrest but there was never enough evidence to take that case to trial so the suspect was released. That person is alive to this day. Alas, he is not longer mentally sound. Det. Sarah Waters from the Fort Worth Cold Case Homicide Unit is now handling Richard’s case. You can reach her at 1-817-392-4307. The case remains unsolved. Last check 6/2021. |
Wallace, Julia Dennis Liverpoole, UK 1931 | Link | The foremost reason why the 1931 murder of Julia Dennis Wallace (April 28, 1861 - Jan 20, 1931) is so famous is because of the chilling crime scene. The front and back door were closed. The windows were closed. It became the set up for many mystery novels. Once entry was made, Julia was found beaten to death on the living room floor. Police found a mackintosh (raincoat) underneath her body. That mackintosh did not belong to Julia. Her husband, William Herbert Wallace, was convicted in 1931 for her murder. His conviction was later overturned by the Court Of Criminal Appeal, the first instance in British legal history where an appeal had been allowed after re-examination of evidence. The case remains unsolved. Last check 6/2021. |

Watson, Donald Ray Kentucky, USA 1978 | Link | Donald Ray "Buddy" Watson (March 13, 1953 - April 20, 1978) was killed while on his way home from work. He was a husband to Brenda Faye Watson and a father to three young children. He worked in the Southeastern Kentucky coal mines. He was ambushed and killed by gunfire. What happened? On April 20, 1978 coal miner Arlie Hill Jr. was driving his green pickup truck with Buddy in the passenger seat. They were ambushed from the woods between 410-424pm on Kentucky 1363, 9 miles SW of Whitley City near the small community of Co-Operative, and 8 miles from the Stearns/Justus Mine in McCreary County where both worked. The first bullet went through the windshield, bounced off the padded dashboard, and struck Watson. There were at least 6 shots. They all came from the side of the road. There were lots of bushes to hide in. I didn't read in the papers that Hill saw anyone or any movement. "He fell over and told me he was hit" Hill said. According to police, Watson was dead by the time they arrived. Watson was taken to Lake Cumberland Medical Center at Somerset. The autopsy took place at the University of Kentucky Medical center. There isn't anything in the papers about autopsy results. It is not clear whether Hill himself got hurt. The authorities believe Hill and Watson were attacked because they were crossing a United Mine Workers (UMW) picket line at the Justis Mine in Stearns, KY. Hill and Watson were part of about 32 miners who were returning to work in the mines. According to the Messenger-Inquirer of May 5, 1978 police determined Watson was shot with a .303 Enfield high-powered rifle based on the analysis of a bullet taken from his body and shell casings found at the scene. The same paper only of Aug 24, 1978 called the ambush a sniper killing. They noted a rifle was tested at the Kentucky State Police crime lab in Frankfort to find out if it was the murder weapon. Where it was found is not clear to me. Police had five suspects. Through 1986, people were indicted but all cases were dismissed. If you have any information please call the Kentucky State Police at (502) 782-1800. Last check 6/2021. |
Watson Jr, John David Pennsylvania, USA 1974 | Link | John David Watson Jr (Oct 18, 1959 - May 2, 1974) was fourteen years old when he left his home in Wheeler, Pennsylvania, around 9pm on May 2, 1974. He never came back. He was found murdered May 3, 1974. John had bought cigarettes at the Pinas Motel where he also spent some time playing pinball. As described in the Herald Standard, 'witnesses saw him biking home with his purchase and waved.' Someone might have been watching him, assumed he had cash or, they just wanted the cigarettes. His brother had mentioned bullying so maybe the robbery was a continuation of the above-mentioned argument. John's bike was found several hundred feet away from his remains. It is possible John was chased and then shot or, he was shot elsewhere and then dragged. Either way, there was a struggle but nobody heard a gunshot. No murder weapon was ever found. John was shot either at the back or the side of his head. His body showed no other forms of trauma. The bullet came from a small caliber weapon. It was never found. John's brother "picked up and hugged the victim and discovered the body was dry, which was in contrast to the rainy wet conditions that existed all night," the affidavit said. That is curious. I wonder is the soil underneath John's body was dry too. One person was arrested but released. If you have any information please contact Pennsylvania CrimeStoppers. Last check 6/2021. |
Webster, Joan Lucinda Massachusetts, USA 1981 | Link | On Nov 28, 1981 Joan Lucinda Webster, a Harvard graduate student, went missing. She was last seen at Boston Logan International Airport, Massachusetts as she returned to Harvard from Thanksgiving break. Her skull was found on April 18, 1990. The rest of her remains were found April 25. Joan (25) was wrapped in a black plastic garbage bag and was buried in a shallow grave. That grave was in a heavily wooded area, prone to flooding. Her grave was covered with two very distinct layers of wooden logs that were stacked there on two separate occasions. She was buried nude aside from a gold necklace and a gold ring. All her unique jewelry was missing. Joan’s murder was not a random act of violence but a carefully plotted murder for which nobody has been held accountable. Last check 12/2022. |
Welch, Michella Washington, USA 1986 | Link | The cold case of Michella Welch (1974 - March 26, 1986) was always linked to the Jennifer Marie Bastian murder. She too had been on a bike, both girls were sexually assaulted, their bodies were left in similar positions, each girl had her clothes disturbed in a similar way, and both were blond and bright-eyed. In 2016, police announced DNA tests showed different men killed Welch and Bastian. In 2018, authorities charged Gary Charles Hartman (66) with first-degree rape and murder in the Michella Welch case. Hartman was arraigned and held on $5 million bail. He had no prior criminal record. He pleaded not guilty. Trial dates were postponed due to Covid19. In March 2022, Gary Charles Hartman was found guilty during a bench trial. The judge rendered a swift guilty verdict and sentenced him to 27 years in prison. Hartman apologized to the Welch family in court. Last check 3/2022. |

West, Tracy Lew Washington, USA 1988 | Link | Tracy West (17) went missing Oct 20, 1988. At approx. 4pm, she left her home in Shelton, Washington, on her motorcycle to go to work at a restaurant in Taylor Towne. Work was about ten minutes away. She never arrived. She always took the same well-travelled trail. Police believe she was abducted from that trail. Police found her bike with the keys in the ignition on the side of the trail. Her glasses were nearby as well as her helmet. It had some scuff marks on it. The scene felt staged. Six years later, on Oct 17, 1994, a skull was found by a hunter. It was Tracy's. Some items were retrieved then too. From the papers, it is not clear if the skull is the only part of Tracy's remains that were ever found. White, Lisa Joy Connecticut, USA 1974 | Link | Lisa Joy White (13) was last seen walking out of a park on Prospect Street into downtown Rockville on the night of Nov. 1, 1974. She had visited a friend and lived just two miles from Prospect. Lisa is white with strawberry blond hair and blue eyes. She has a small chicken pox mark on her forehead. When she was last seen she wore green pants, tan work boots, and a denim jacket. Her dental records are filed with NamUs as well as her DNA. I read online authorities initially treated this as a runaway case. This may have hindered the search. Her sister said in the papers she loved “acrobatic dancing and cheerleading” but also that she was “no stranger to mischief and perhaps mature beyond her 13 young years. She had a boyfriend. I believe he was 18 at the time. My mother did not approve, obviously.” In 2009, her case was added to NamUs. Her case number with the Vernon Police is 000000019. Prosecutors argued Willingham deliberately set the 1991 fire but three reviews of the evidence by outside experts found the fire should not have been ruled arson. Willingham was executed for accidental fire. In 2014, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied a petition to vacate his conviction. The Board's indifference in this case is a disgrace. Wood, Daniel Kenneth Maine, USA 1954 | Link | On July 7, 1954, Daniel Kenneth Wood (Oct 30, 1941 - July 23, 1954) left his home in South Gray, Maine, to visit a friend. He was twelve years old. He took his fishing gear. Whether he ever arrived at that friend’s house, is unclear. The Lewiston Daily Sun reports that later in the day, Danny called his mom from Gray Center. He said he was going to earn 50 cents per hour going door to door with a sales rep in Lewiston. His mom told him to be careful. He told her not to worry, he would be back for dinner. He never came back to her. His remains were found in the Androscoggin River, Auburn, Maine. Whoever murdered Daniel tried to dispose of his body by throwing it in the river. Danny’s body was nude. Someone beat him to death. His skull had seven wounds ranging from 1 to 4 inches. The papers say police never found the murder weapon. Was Danny beaten to death with an object? Police also never found the original crime scene. Where Danny’s remains were found is just the spot where his body floated towards but most likely not where he passed away or where he was beaten. We could have three crime scene: where he was found, where he was beaten, and where he died. Danny had a shoestring tied around one of his wrist. There is the possibility his wrists were tied before the beating. Danny could have been restrained and forced to walk with the attacker. But it can also mean that the attacker bound or intended to bind his wrists after Danny was dead. The paper mentioned the wrists were “laced together during the fatal beating.” How do you know that for sure? Any imprints of the skin being tied together might have been gone due to decomposition in the river. Wortman, Lisa Lorene New Mexico, USA 1994 | Link | Lisa Lorene Wortman (Sep 29, 1971 – June 6, 1994) was found murdered on June 6, 1994 near the University of New Mexico Arena a.k.a The Pit, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lisa (22) was reported missing by her sister and father after she had been gone for almost five weeks. Lisa’s dismembered remains were found in a manhole near The Pit, the university’s sport’s arena. Whoever killed Lisa this way knew her personally, hoped her remains would deteriorate before detection, and killed her elsewhere. We are looking for someone who knew what to do or, who was told what to do. Traces of cocaine were found (no information to indicate if that was enough to kill/die) but her autopsy could not determine a cause of death. Why did Lisa have to die? Recognition. She knew who did this to her. If you have any information about this case please contact the UNM Police Department at 1(505) 277-2241. You can submit an anonymous tip online. Young, Helen Ruth Conwright Texas, USA 1976 | Link | Helen Ruth Conwright Young (Aug 31, 1936 – July 31, 1976) was last seen Friday July 30, 1976 around 1130pm. Husband Roy Young told police ‘his wife was last seen at 1130pm Friday.’ Did he repeat information or had he seen her? He reported Helen missing Sat July 31 around 8am. On July 31, authorities searched the area where the Young family lived on Rt. 6 in Novice and the entire Young property. No remains were found. Then suddenly, Monday, after the official police search, Helen’s remains were found by one of her brothers around 730am Aug 2, 1976, in a place that had been searched. Note the papers only reported Helen died by suffocation. Suffocation can be caused by an object such as a pillow, a chemical, or manually. The Sheriff’s Office questioned two suspects and investigated a third. I gather the husband and the brother who found Helen murdered were part of this trio. A blood trail was found inside the house that ran through the hall to the back door of the house. Items were sent to a lab for testing but I have not read anything about results. Last check 6/2021. |

Zeigler, William Thomas Florida, USA 1975 | Link | In Dec 1975, a quadruple murder took place in the Zeigler Furniture Store (Winter Garden, Florida). The victims were Charles Mays, Virginia and Perry Edwards, and their daughter Eunice Edwards-Zeigler. The fifth victim, William Thomas Zeigler, became the sole suspect because he survived. The case is riddled by police misconduct (lying on the stand), prosecutorial misconduct (withheld evidence), and forensic testing disproving the charges. I have written so many posts about this case, I gave Zeigler his own category, check the left margin. The latest: an evidentiary hearing for touch DNA testing was held on March 31, 2016. Judge Whitehead denied the request on July 18, 2016. On November 23, 2016, an appeal was filed in the Supreme Court of Florida. On April 21, 2017 the Florida Supreme Court denied the touch DNA request. On May 8, 2017 a motion for a rehearing with the US Supreme Court was filed. It was denied November 13, 2017. In the summer of 2019, the appeal for DNA testing to the Florida Conviction Integrity Unit was denied. A new attempt to get evidence tested with DNA was launched in 2021. On Oct 27, Florida Circuit Judge Patricia L. Strowbridge advanced the case for DNA testing with modern technology. The Defense Team needs to get a protocol in place by Dec 2022. It was approved Dec 19, 2022 for all evidence pieces. Last check 12/22. |
