M-Vac helps solve Beslanowitch case

September 25, 2013 By Alice

dna vacuumThe M-Vac System made the difference in the Krystal Lynn Beslanowitch case. In 1995, Krystal’s nude body was found lying face down on the rocks, bloody and broken, on the banks of the Provo River, Utah. She was just 17 years old. Parts of the large, granite rocks were saved as evidence as well as scrapings from under Beslanowitch’s fingernails. How important was it to save those rocks as evidence? Crucial.

In 1995, we did not have the technology to extract DNA from rocks. Now we can because we have the M-Vac System!

In my last #CrimeChat on Twitter, you were introduced to the system by M-Vac’s very own CEO, Jared Bradley. He generously sat behind his laptop for more than an hour to explain how the system works, what it can do, and how it was invented.

I hope that the M-Vac will be used to examine stored evidence in other cold cases. It is an amazing invention!

Jared gave me the following press release about the M-Vac System in Krystal’s case.

“M-Vac System DNA Collection Device Helps Solve 18 year Old Cold Case.
New wet-vacuum collects critical touch DNA from river rock that was used as a murder weapon.

Bluffdale, Utah, Sept 25, 2013 – M-Vac Systems, a leader in DNA collection technology, announced that its sampling device was instrumental in helping solve the 1995 murder of Krystal Lynn Beslanowitch. Utilizing the M-Vac’s unique wet-vacuum approach, investigators collected enough touch DNA from a rock to generate a full profile and move the case forward.

At the time of the murder 18 years ago, then Detective Todd Bonner was dispatched to the scene and found the body of Beslanowitch, who had been bludgeoned with one of the rocks that lay near her body. Many resources were devoted to solving the crime, but the evidence from the scene would not tell the story. Krystal’s case went cold.

“It’s a case that’s haunted me for almost my whole career,” said Bonner, now the Wasatch County Sheriff. On September 17th 2013, Sheriff Bonner was able to close the loop – he tracked the suspect to Florida and personally put the handcuffs on Joseph Michael Simpson.

Referring to the process of collecting Simpson’s DNA from the rock, Cami Green of Sorenson Forensics stated “In forensics, that’s fairly new technology. It is the most sensitive collection method we have at our disposal.”

“The M-Vac System deploys a unique combination of sterile solution spray and vacuum that dramatically increases DNA uptake” said Jared Bradley, President of M-Vac Systems. “We are pleased to provide the device that helped solve this case. Getting DNA from a cigarette butt is impressive, but collecting a full DNA profile from an 18 year old rock is amazing.”

Wasatch County worked closely with other police agencies, crime labs and prosecutors from around the State of Utah and Florida to make the arrest. Joseph Simpson will be facing aggravated murder charges and extradited to Utah.

“There are many officers, analysts and agencies that need to be thanked for their part in solving the Beslanowitch homicide.” Sheriff Bonner stated. “Without a doubt, the M-Vac system is the major tool that allowed us to make critical DNA connections in this case.”

“Our hats are off to all of those involved in solving this crime, especially Sheriff Bonner” said Bradley. “He never gave up, which is a credit to his profession and his Department.”

The M-Vac System is also referred to as a wet-vacuum sampling device, a vacuum-assisted instrument, and a forensics DNA vacuum.

Established in 2002, M-Vac Systems, Inc. creates, develops, and manufactures the patented DNA collection system for use by law enforcement agencies and crime labs. For more information, go to www.m-vac.com

Author Notes

On this website, I write about old, unsolved cases. Most are from the pre-DNA era and are in need of renewed media attention. I only do research and leave the active investigation of these cases to the professionals.

My posts are about homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme and research. It remains my prerogative to not review a book.

My database has over 300 cases listed by the victim’s last name. You will find a brief description there as well. The database will always be free to the public to use. You cannot buy ad space on my website, ever.

All writing suggestions that come in by email are added to my to-do list in the order in which they were received. Please be patient. My to-do list is very long but no case gets dropped and I will get back in touch.

Defrosting Cold Cases is NOT an organization. It is my brainchild.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the about page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you still cannot find the answer there, please contact me.

Thank you,

In March 2015, the Connecticut State Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard lapointe. On Oct 2, 2015, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Richard was set free. The judge ruled that he cannot be retried for the 1987 rape-murder of Mrs. Bernice Martin. Richard Lapointe died on Aug 4, 2020 of Covid19 complications.

In 1987, someone killed Bernice Martin. I hope that she will not become a forgotten file.
