Murdered: Duncan MacPherson

June 16, 2012 By Alice

Cold a long time by John Leake

The case of Duncan MacPherson (February 3, 1966 – August 9, 1989) started as a missing person case. After reading John Leake‘s book it is clear at least to me that it was murder or manslaughter (3rd degree). You do not have to lie in wait or have done meticulous planning. Your state of mind, the knowledge […]

#cclivechat Recap June 15, 2012

June 15, 2012 By Alice

sum it up #cclivechat

In today’s #cclivechat, Sue Carney covered body fluids testing, limitations of tests and forensic interpretation of body fluids with us. It brought a few surprises such as that urine and feces contain very little DNA, that some cells look identical and are thus less suited for forensic purposes. Sue also indicated the difficulties with several tests and […]

Renewed media attention for Teresa Sue Hilt

June 14, 2012 By Alice

Smiling Tess

Renewed media attention for Teresa Sue Hilt. We did it! There is again a buzz in Tess’ cold case! Before my postings, Tess did not have any Internet presence. Her case was in newspaper articles but they did not feature on any website or blog. All that has changed. Not only did Tess get a […]

Key evidence lost in Hank Skinner case

June 14, 2012 By Alice

hank skinner

Key evidence is lost in the case of Hank Skinner so despite the fact that the state of Texas now backs further DNA testing, we still will not get all the answers we need. There are pictures of the jackets (see here) but the big blood- and sweat-stained tan jacket with snap buttons down the front found near […]

Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account by Dr. Miklos Nyiszli

June 11, 2012 By Alice

A book not just about World War II, Auschwitz or the Nazi regime but even more about perseverance, compartmentalizing your brain to survive and making the best rational decisions while under inhuman distress. That is what it is about to me but read it yourself and then tell me what you think. Auschwitz consisted of Auschwitz […]

David Lee Gavitt free after 30 years!

June 11, 2012 By Alice

From PBS Frontline comes fantastic news! David Lee Gavitt is free after modern forensic arson detection determined there was no arson but an accidental fire. Gavitt is amongst several who have had their cases re-examined and thankfully, have been freed from prison and some from death row. Alas, all this comes too late for Willingham. […]

Sum it up #38

June 9, 2012 By Alice

sum it up #cclivechat

I have not done a Sum it up in a while so it is time. During my newspaper rounds I found some interesting articles. The BBC reports about the 15 year old UK rape case against John Molt. Molt is accused of rape of a minor. “The court heard the father of accused Jon Molt provided […]

Author Notes

On this website, I write about old, unsolved cases. Most are from the pre-DNA era and are in need of renewed media attention. I only do research and leave the active investigation of these cases to the professionals.

My posts are about homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme and research. It remains my prerogative to not review a book.

My database has over 325 cases listed by the victim’s last name. You will find a brief description there as well. The database will always be free to the public to use. You cannot buy ad space on my website, ever.

All writing suggestions that come in by email are added to my to-do list in the order in which they were received. Please be patient. My to-do list is very long but no case gets dropped and I will get back in touch.

Defrosting Cold Cases is NOT an organization. It is my brainchild.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the about page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you still cannot find the answer there, please contact me.

Thank you,

Alice de Sturler

Richard Lapointe

Category: ALL POSTS

In March 2015, the Connecticut State Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard lapointe. On Oct 2, 2015, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Richard was set free. The judge ruled that he cannot be retried for the 1987 rape-murder of Mrs. Bernice Martin. Richard Lapointe died on Aug 4, 2020 of Covid19 complications.

In 1987, someone killed Bernice Martin. I hope that she will not become a forgotten file.
