Recap #CCLiveChat Feb 26, 2011

March 5, 2011 By Alice

We just hosted the first ever #CCLiveChat on Twitter and really, what an hour it was! Fantastic to see the participation and the enthusiasm.

Joe and I were joined by several people and we wish to thank them not just for participating but for the genuine exchange of information: katcop13, lilaclounge, deaddollmovie, littlelawyer, worldcrime, Evie_G_L, Org9 and cwpseattle. We got lots of RTs as well. The entire verbatim thread is below.

LilacLounge a.k.a. Sue Carney discussed with us the problems with DNA and that “elimination of a person who has non matching DNA *is* definitive but matching DNA is not.” That is a fact that is too often overlooked and I thought that this would be a great topic for another guest post by Sue. Sue also introduced the discussion on what kind of elements in cold cases form new leads even after a few decades.

Katcop13 alerted us the the disappearance of Judge Crater.

Little_Lawyer gave us the Guardian article about the records of Victorian women murderers and thieves. Those records will be placed online after 130 years! Everything from prison photographs to parole details will be published by Ancestry.co.uk.

Deaddollmovie discussed with us the gruesome case of the Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders. It is the horror story of three girl scouts who on their first night of summer camp, June 13, 1977, were bludgeoned, strangled, and murdered. These girls were only 8, 9, and 10 years old. Deaddollmovie is still actively pursuing this case. Not only is there a website (click here), but they will be making a diorama, and Joe and I will jump into this case to assist where we can. We will start by having Deaddollmovie guest blog on DCC about the case. That post will be an introduction to the case for the readers of DCC and Cold Case Squad. After that, readers can go to the site and will have an easier time navigating and following the story. Updates will be posted by Joe and I on both our websites.

Evie_G_L was curious as ever about public participation in investigations. I tell you, that is one sleuth under the cover of a gardener! Beware if you see her in the yard, folks! Evie is doing more than planting, she is watching! Just kidding, she had great questions about the usefulness of sharing information with others not related to the crime. In other words, does it really help to brainstorm about these old cases? I think that the evidence is in the comment section from DCC: YES! People not only talk after a few decades (wish they would do it sooner but better late than never) and thanks to giving people the option to comment via the contact page, they are ensured that I will not immediate post their email but carefully weigh what can and cannot exposed online.

Org9, my dear friend from the northern most borders as we say in the Midwest, asked for some extra media attention for the case of this unidentified lady. The remains of this unidentified woman were found in a wooded rest stop/picnic area. The rest stop is located at on Highway 7, west of the Town of Rockwood, outside of Guelph, Ontario. It is believed that the victim had died between 2 and 6 weeks prior to discovery. She had a dental plate – partial upper dental plate consisting of two teeth – left incisor and canine. She had previous facial injuries resulting in a broken nose and damage to the left eye socket. The left eye socket injury corresponds to the two teeth on the dental plate. There was also previous injury to the 7th rib on the left front of her rib cage. Please check out this case and if you have any information contact Detective Constable Paul Johnson of the Ontario Provincial Police – Wellington County Detachment at 519-323-3130 or call toll-free 1-888-310-1122. You may also leave a message via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Jumping in last after having watched us was cwpseattle who responded when Joe said that the reason why we were having the live chat was to assist law enforcement and that bloggers can assist the cops by exposing the stories and giving it more media attention. Thanks, Mike!

From the RTs and the DMs that keep coming in it is clear that many cops were watching but not participating. Both Joe and I wish you will in some of our upcoming chats. We will be doing these every Friday between noon-1pm EST and as is clear, many of us will still be on Twitter even if the hour is gone. Please do chime in and let us know how we can help. We also hope for more crime journalist and author participation.

Author Notes

Since 2009, I write about unsolved cases that need renewed media attention. I only do research and leave active investigations to the authorities.

My posts cover homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to unsolved cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme, tone, and research. It is my prerogative to not review a book. Please check the FAQ page for more.

My databases are free to the public. Cases are sorted by the victim’s last name.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the About page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you cannot find the answers there, please contact me.

Thank you,

Alice de Sturler
