Today’s #cclivechat centered on the tragic case of Fredericka Mary. Joe McGinty described the case: “In the early morning hours of Mother’s Day, May 11, 1986, a man in Needham, Massachusetts would make a disturbing discovery inside of a trash barrel as he searched for recyclable bottles at Claxton Field, a local playground in the […]

Ian Rivers continued his series on cyber-bullying today in #cclivechat. Our aim today was to dig further into cyber-bullying. We ended up exploring quite a few definitions, perceptions, and perimeters. For example, if people use their true identity online will they be more aware of their own behaviour online? If they decide to use a pseudonym […]

This recap #cclivechat on Friday the 13th is a keeper! It was perfect to have a Bad Luck Detective as my guest! It is also special because it is illustrated by @McVladie who has been sending me pictures all week …. to set the mood! Suzie described her books, being a cop, when she knew that […]

This recap #cclivechat is one to bookmark! Laura Madison explained what crisis mapping is, how it can be used in cold cases, and gave examples using the ongoing Colorado wildfires. Laura described herself as a “mom, research crimino-digitologist, poli junkie, vol tech comm outcast, crisisnapper, crowdsauce pilot JK!” I could not resist calling her out […]

Our guests today were Christa Miller and Tim Burrow who launched #copchat last Wednesday on Twitter. The first chat was a huge success so it is good to evaluate now that the rush is over. We discussed what #copchat can do to improve the communication between law enforcement and the public. Some chimed in to […]

Recap #cclivechat May 11, 2012

May 11, 2012 By Alice

Ian Rivers returned as guest to discuss cyber-bullying with us. It was a fascinating hour. We started with cyber-bullying shifting from being predominantly in instant messages (more private) to chat-rooms, emails, and social media so more public. We looked into behaviour and manners we apply in daily life. But somehow, on the Internet they can be […]

Author Notes

On this website, I write about old, unsolved cases. Most are from the pre-DNA era and are in need of renewed media attention. I only do research and leave the active investigation of these cases to the professionals.

My posts are about homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme and research. It remains my prerogative to not review a book.

My database has over 325 cases listed by the victim’s last name. You will find a brief description there as well. The database will always be free to the public to use. You cannot buy ad space on my website, ever.

All writing suggestions that come in by email are added to my to-do list in the order in which they were received. Please be patient. My to-do list is very long but no case gets dropped and I will get back in touch.

Defrosting Cold Cases is NOT an organization. It is my brainchild.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the about page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you still cannot find the answer there, please contact me.

Thank you,

Alice de Sturler

In March 2015, the Connecticut State Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard lapointe. On Oct 2, 2015, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Richard was set free. The judge ruled that he cannot be retried for the 1987 rape-murder of Mrs. Bernice Martin. Richard Lapointe died on Aug 4, 2020 of Covid19 complications.

In 1987, someone killed Bernice Martin. I hope that she will not become a forgotten file.
