A flurry of information passed us again in this CCLiveChat. It shows that starting #cclivechat on Twitter was the right thing to do. Joe and I were joined by many today and we discussed a string of cases and issues in criminology.
Joe reported about the Long Island Beach murders and victims found in his backyard and alerted us to his new blog post about the case. We briefly touched on the old LIB-serial killer Joel Rifkin. Rifkin was convicted of the murder of nine women (although it is believed he killed as many as 17), mostly drug addicted prostitutes, between 1989 and 1993 in New York City. Although Rifkin often hired prostitutes in Brooklyn and Manhattan, he lived in East Meadow, a suburban town on Long Island.
From the type of victims targeted, we jumped into profiling. Is profiling “it” or is it best to rely on the entirety of the evidence and let that lead you to a type of person? Do we dismiss people too soon after we receive a profile?
Another case we touched on briefly was Brenda Martinez. Kathleen Ryan is interested in digging into this one so she will keep us posted about this case. Kathleen has been working hard revising a book she is writing about an old case. Curious? Want to know more? I will keep you posted!
Teen violence came up when we discussed the Canadian cold case of Karen Caughlin. Is it possible that Karen’s death was covered up by a hit-and-run? I have some pictures on DCC to show you what type of vehicle and colour paint was involved. I got some great tips while we were chatting that the paint quality combined with Canada’s weather led to most of those cars rusting quickly. In other words, the car that was used to hit Karen, would not have attracted attention or aroused suspicion if it was brought to the shop for an overall re-paint job! This is another way the vehicle could have disappeared quickly without being destroyed.
Joe and I also made Stephanie want to go back to school so beware… participating in #cclivechat might get you back into college!
