Our topic for today’s #ccLiveChat was bullying and our guest was none other than Ian Rivers! I can honestly say that this was one of my most favourite chats. Fortunate for me, Ian agreed to come back for more chats because I still have many issues I wish to bring to the table!
After Ian discussed how his research career got started, we discussed cases and state legislation. For example, in Tennessee it was debated to change the law so that it “would allow students to speak out against homosexuality without punishment if that’s what their religious beliefs call for.” But sets the limits of what religious beliefs are and whether we adhere to the evolved religious beliefs or not? Ian did think that celebrities coming out of the closet can help youngster who struggle with their identity. However, more helpful would be if athletes came out. Sports and athletes are so admired that one word from them would probably do more good than we can imagine. Ian mentioned that actor Ian Murray McKellen goes into school to talk to children about bullying.

New Jersey’s law “known as the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights is considered the toughest legislation against bullying in the nation. Each school must designate an anti-bullying specialist to investigate complaints; each district must, in turn, have an anti-bullying coordinator; and the State Education Department will evaluate every effort, posting grades on its Web site. Superintendents said that educators who failed to comply could lose their licenses.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s YRBSS programs can be found here. “The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six types of health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including—
- Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence
- Tobacco use
- Alcohol and other drug use
- Sexual risk behaviors
- Unhealthy dietary behaviors
- Physical inactivity
YRBSS also measures the prevalence of obesity and asthma among youth and young adults.”
