Missing: Stephen Scott Hammerle

August 27, 2016 By Alice

Missing: Stephen Scott HammerleStephen Scott Hammerle a.k.a. “Stevie” or “Steve” or “Stephen Faircloth” was born on August 18, 1955. He went missing on August 22, 1981. He was just 26 years old.

Stephen is a tall white male, approx. 5’8″ and weighs between 160-170lbs. He is paralyzed from the waist down due to injuries from an accident. I have not been able to find out what kind of accident caused these injuries. Stephen cannot move around without a wheelchair, and carries a colostomy bag.

When he was last seen, Stephen was with a man called Joseph “Joe” Grashner. From the missing person flyers it seems that Stephen and Joe left a birthday party in Manhattan, Kansas, in a red van. They left with one man who was also at that party and another man who came later. I have not been able to find any information about those two men.

Missing: Stephen Scott Hammerle/NamUsStephen’s hair is brown. He had a beard and mustache when he disappeared. His eyes are blue. Stephen has no upper teeth, a scar on his left eye, and several tattoos.

Stephen has “LOVE LISA” tattooed across his fingers. Lisa is his daughter and she is the one who contacted me.

There is nothing online about her dad except for the repeated missing person data. It is heartbreaking as she has so many questions. Like all other children who have a parent who went missing she has not given up hope. However, it is hard for her to keep asking others for help and/or information. At some point people start to forget the missing. But I trust that you understand Lisa cannot forget her dad.

Aside from these finger tattoos, Stephen has:

  • a tattoo of a small eagle on his right upper arm,
  • a tattoo of a cat/leopard on his left arm;
  • a tattoo of a man on his right forearm,
  • a “love” tattoo on his upper right arm,
  • a “Leo” tattoo on his upper left arm, and
  • a few more tattoos on unknown spots of his body.

What is important to note is that all tattoos are homemade and were not drawn by a professional.

If you have any information that can help the authorities locate Stephen please contact Detective Curt Steel from the Riley County Police Department, Manhattan, Kansas at 785-537-2112. Stephen’s Case Number is 81-5541.

Lisa made a Facebook page for her dad. You know what to do there. There is also a Facebook page for Joe Grashner. Stephen has a NamUs file but Joe does not.

Author Notes

On this website, I write about old, unsolved cases. Most are from the pre-DNA era and are in need of renewed media attention. I only do research and leave the active investigation of these cases to the professionals.

My posts are about homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme and research. It remains my prerogative to not review a book.

My database has over 300 cases listed by the victim’s last name. You will find a brief description there as well. The database will always be free to the public to use. You cannot buy ad space on my website, ever.

All writing suggestions that come in by email are added to my to-do list in the order in which they were received. Please be patient. My to-do list is very long but no case gets dropped and I will get back in touch.

Defrosting Cold Cases is NOT an organization. It is my brainchild.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the about page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you still cannot find the answer there, please contact me.

Thank you,

Alice de Sturler

In March 2015, the Connecticut State Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard lapointe. On Oct 2, 2015, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Richard was set free. The judge ruled that he cannot be retried for the 1987 rape-murder of Mrs. Bernice Martin. Richard Lapointe died on Aug 4, 2020 of Covid19 complications.

In 1987, someone killed Bernice Martin. I hope that she will not become a forgotten file.
