Unidentified: Conroe Lake John Doe

Unidentified Conroe Lake John Doe

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office are asking for help in the case of an unidentified man I call the Conroe Lake John Doe.

On August 3, 1986, his body was found floating in Conroe’s Crater Lake. He was bound to two concrete cinder blocks with an electrical cord.

Authorities think that the unidentified man was white, approx. 30 years old, 5 feet 6, and he may have been known under the street name “New York Billy.”

I don’t know why they think this nickname applies but it could mean they have thoughts about this case but nothing concrete.

This man has three distinctive tattoos: two on the left arm and one on the right arm. I think they may represent the woman who gave him a daughter.Conroe Lake John Doe

The right upper arm says “Baby Dawn.” The left upper arm says “Liz.” Mother and daughter?

The flower under “Baby Dawn” looks like a ‘she loves me – she loves me not’ drawing. It might be a child’s design.

The left lower arm seems to be an unfinished tattoo. I see a cartoon figure’s head with pointy ears.

Honestly, it looks to me like a self-designed tattoo of a fantasy island where the shoreline has characteristics that resemble dragon tails (right), a partial claw (left), and the mountain looks like a cartoon figure with maybe the onset of scales on the left?

Unidentified Conroe Lake tattoosI turned the picture of the tattoo upside down to see is it made sense. Then I saw a bird in the upper right corner.

Someone told me he saw two sets of initials in the tattoo: VS and BK.

What do you see? Do you think this is a professionally designed tattoo or a self-design? Do you recognize anything in these tattoos?

If you have any information about this unidentified man, the tattoos or you think you know who “Liz and Dawn” are, please call Montgomery County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-STOP (7867) or check their website.

You can also contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Squad directly at 281-297-6508 or ask for these detectives:

  • Detective Terance Greenwood at (936) 538-3781
  • Detective Ken Bivens at (936) 538-3765

Author Notes

On this website, I write about old, unsolved cases. Most are from the pre-DNA era and are in need of renewed media attention. I only do research and leave the active investigation of these cases to the professionals.

My posts are about homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme and research. It remains my prerogative to not review a book.

My database has over 325 cases listed by the victim’s last name. You will find a brief description there as well. The database will always be free to the public to use. You cannot buy ad space on my website, ever.

All writing suggestions that come in by email are added to my to-do list in the order in which they were received. Please be patient. My to-do list is very long but no case gets dropped and I will get back in touch.

Defrosting Cold Cases is NOT an organization. It is my brainchild.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the about page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you still cannot find the answer there, please contact me.

Thank you,

Alice de Sturler

In March 2015, the Connecticut State Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard lapointe. On Oct 2, 2015, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Richard was set free. The judge ruled that he cannot be retried for the 1987 rape-murder of Mrs. Bernice Martin. Richard Lapointe died on Aug 4, 2020 of Covid19 complications.

In 1987, someone killed Bernice Martin. I hope that she will not become a forgotten file.
