Gun Violence

Every year, too many people die of gun violence. Too many of those cases do not get solved.

I want to highlight two cases here. Searching in newspaper archives, I have found little that can solve either. So, this is a post with two cases as works-in-progress. I could have kept them as drafts however, that would delay their posting on the website, and if anything, these two cases need your attention. So yes, incomplete but nevertheless, here goes!

Jesus Daniel Corona-Paredes (22) and Thomas Dwayne Everett (25) were both young, died of gun violence, shot in the early morning hours, both were shot in the head while in their cars, and both were young fathers and husbands.

Jesus Daniel Corona-Paredes was just twenty-two years old when he was found dead on May 20, 2006, in Louisville, Kentucky. Jesus died of gun violence early on Saturday morning. He left behind his wife Desiree and their young son, Cayden.

What happened?

Around 4am, Jesus was found in the 100 block of Royal Gardens Court in south Louisville, KY. He died of a gunshot wound to the head, said Rita Taylor, a Jefferson County Deputy Coroner. There were no suspects.

I have not found anything yet in the newspaper archives about any progress in this case. What prompted the shooting? Was there any danger for Desiree and Cayden? Caliber? Witnesses?

If you have any information that can help the authorities solve this case, please call the LMPD tip line at 574-LMPD (574-5673).

Thomas Dwayne Everett, Sr., (25) was also a victim of gun violence. He was killed on July 8, 2000 in Kansas City, Kansas.

Thomas was killed by one gun shot to the head. He was a husband to Heather, and father to Carolynn and Thomas Jr.

What happened?

Thomas was found dead in the 300 block South Mill Street around 1am on July 8, 2000. He was in the driver’s seat, slumped over the steering wheel. In the passenger seat was an unnamed woman who was shot in the chest but her injuries were not fatal.

So, I started to wonder who the intended target was, what their relationship was, enemies, etc.

From clippings that the family sent, it appeared a break was coming as first-degree murder charges were filed against Cecil Henderson (18) according to Wyandotte County DA Chris Schneider. I found the newspaper articles online in the Kansas City Star.

Henderson was also charged with one count of aggravated battery in the shooting of the female passenger. However, according to the Kansas City Star of Sept 26, 2000 those charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.

The paper does not mention the female passenger’s identity or her relationship with Thomas or Henderson. It just mentioned her age at 36 years old.

After the dismissal, there does not seem to be anything else to find.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department has an unsolved homicides page however Thomas’ case is not on there at the time of writing. If you have any information that can help the authorities, please call the KCKPD Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477) or use their website.

Note

As soon as I find more information, I will update the cases and the database. For information on gun violence please explore the CDC website where you will find facts, statistics, and ongoing research projects.

Author Notes

On this website, I write about old, unsolved cases. Most are from the pre-DNA era and are in need of renewed media attention. I only do research and leave the active investigation of these cases to the professionals.

My posts are about homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme and research. It remains my prerogative to not review a book.

My database has over 325 cases listed by the victim’s last name. You will find a brief description there as well. The database will always be free to the public to use. You cannot buy ad space on my website, ever.

All writing suggestions that come in by email are added to my to-do list in the order in which they were received. Please be patient. My to-do list is very long but no case gets dropped and I will get back in touch.

Defrosting Cold Cases is NOT an organization. It is my brainchild.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the about page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you still cannot find the answer there, please contact me.

Thank you,

Alice de Sturler

In March 2015, the Connecticut State Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard lapointe. On Oct 2, 2015, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Richard was set free. The judge ruled that he cannot be retried for the 1987 rape-murder of Mrs. Bernice Martin. Richard Lapointe died on Aug 4, 2020 of Covid19 complications.

In 1987, someone killed Bernice Martin. I hope that she will not become a forgotten file.
