DJ and Amanda
DJ and Amanda

Donald “DJ” Edward Fickey (Nov 14, 1988 – Oct 3, 2016) was a father to three children and beloved brother of Amanda Shirley.

His case is a complex one. Did he commit suicide? If so, what was his reason to leave behind his three beloved children? Did someone kill DJ?

This case has many unanswered questions. However, in this post, we wanted to give you more insight into DJ himself. So, here is a short interview with Amanda about her little brother.

Amanda on DJ

1: What were DJ’s favorite dishes to eat?

“His absolute favorite was chicken casserole but DJ loved to eat. He was not picky at all. He absolutely loved Thanksgiving because he got the best of both worlds. Family and food. He was also a great cook.”

2: Tell us something about DJ as a father. How did he react when he learned he would be a dad?

“He was as happy as could be when he found out he was going to be a dad, even when he was expecting his twins he was on cloud nine. Even though he was scared to death because it was twins, he was still a proud father. Being a father cane naturally to DJ, he didn’t have any real challenges when it came to being a father. He had a great father and knew exactly what to do.”

3: When DJ was young, did he ever mention a dream-job or something that he wanted to become and why?

“First he wanted to be a bull rider. We talked him out of that as it was so dangerous. Then DJ started training as a MMA fighter. He loved it. And was looking forward to continuing to train for this.”

4: Did DJ play any instruments? Favorite music?

“DJ had many talents but never in a instrument. He loved all types of music from rock, to country to rap.”

5: What was his idea of the ultimate vacation? Beach, hiking, camping, etc.

“He was a outdoors man. He loved being outside so I would say camping was his favorite.”

6: Did DJ play any sports? Did he follow any on TV?

“He was a football player when he was a boy and he was the biggest Tennessee Vols fan you would ever meet. He even named one of his twin girls after Peyton Manning.”

7: How have you explained to his children what happened to their father and why?

“We have told them that a evil man killed their father and that he is now in heaven watching over all of us. We haven’t really got into the why yet as they are still so young that they don’t even understand the death or that he’s never coming back.”

8: Is there anything else you wish the world to know about your brother?

“That I miss him, his mother, his children, and so many family and friends. Life is so dull and boring without him here. He always had you laughing and was so funny. And that everyone should know that this could very easily be their brother or sister that this happened to.”

Author Notes

On my website, I write about old, unsolved cases. Most are from the pre-DNA era and need renewed media attention. I only do research and leave active investigation of these cases to the professionals.

My posts are about homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases.

On book reviews: I only review select works of true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction/mysteries. The stories have to fit my website's theme and research. It remains my prerogative to not review a book. Please check the FAQ page for more!

My database has hundreds of cases listed by the victim’s last name. You will find a brief description there as well. The database is free to the public.

All writing suggestions for cases that come in by email are added to my to-do list in the order in which they were received. Please be patient. My to-do list is very long but no case gets dropped and I will get back in touch.

If you have any questions about my website please check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the about page, and the tabs in both menu bars. If you still cannot find the answer there, please contact me.

Thank you,

In March 2015, the Connecticut State Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard lapointe. On Oct 2, 2015, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Richard was set free. The judge ruled that he cannot be retried for the 1987 rape-murder of Mrs. Bernice Martin. Richard Lapointe died on Aug 4, 2020 of Covid19 complications.

In 1987, someone killed Bernice Martin. I hope that she will not become a forgotten file.
